As many as six students of Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) including Dr Chandan Kishore, Dr Neha Kakani, Dr Baldeep Kaur Maan, Dr Pawan Agrawal, Dr Anubhav Thukral and Dr Varun Deepak under the banner of Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) sat on a 48-hour relay hunger strike from 10 am on IMS premises today.

Talking to media persons in BHU, general secretary of the RDA, Dr Mahesh P Kate, demanded constitution of a non-political commission to assess the pros and cons of the quota issue. “This (proposal to enhance quota) is a politically motivated decision of the Union government and it would hit the entire education system hard in the country,” said RDA members.

It may be noted that the relay hunger strike of medicos entered its fifth day here today. However, the students continued to extend medical assistance to patients by running their own parallel OPD ward outside the OPD of Sir Sunderlal Hospital of BHU. More than 500 patients were diagnosed and given free medicines.

The infuriated students have decided to take out a massive rally on Thursday afternoon to lodge their protest against the issue. Heads of different religions were likely to participate in the proposed rally.

EXPRESSING SOLIDARITY with agitating doctors across the country, Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College students on Wednesday also began an indefinite hunger strike against the Centre’s reservation policy. Hundreds of students sat in dharna and 21 doctors observed hunger strike. All protesters wore black ribbons.

“Many educational institutes, coaching centres, along with political and non-political organisations, have promised to give support to the protest,” the students said. Meanwhile, a strategy is being chalked out to make the nationwide bandh of May 25 a success. They demanded immediate withdrawal of the reservation policy and appointment of non-government experts to have a relook at the reservation policy. Last week, hundreds of IMA, NIMA and junior doctors’ association members had taken out a silent procession. They also handed over their charter of demands to the district magistrate and kept their clinics closed for a day.
