Rita Devi of Kesaria in West Champaran district, whose husband Jagdish died a few months ago, sold her daugther to Jaleshwar Das and Rajkumari of Paru-Bishunpur village on Thursday.
Rita, according to reports, stayed at Paru-Bishunpur when she was on her way from Kesaria to Lalganj in Vaishali district to meet her parents.
When contacted, Rajkumari said she had given Rs 21 to Rita as she had no money for travel and that the baby would be "returned" to her when she returned.
Muzaffarpur's District Magistrate Vinay Kumar said he had asked the sub-divisional officer to inquire into the matter.
