Sankaranarayanan was sworn in by Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Justice J Chellameswar, at a ceremony in Raj Bhavan here.

Nine Assam cabinet ministers, including Bhumidhar Barman, Pradyut Bordoloi, Bharat Narah, Pramilla Rani Brahma and Prithvi Majhi, besides senior government officials were present at the ceremony.

Sankaranarayanan would be in charge of Assam till a new governor was appointed, Raj Bhavan sources said.

Mathur, 83, died at Fortis Hospital in New Delhi. He was discharged last morning following treatment at Escorts Heart Institute there for the past seven days.

He was admitted to Fortis Hospital again after he complained of uneasiness in the evening and he died of cardiac arrest last night.

Mathur, who had assumed the charge as governor of Assam on July 4, 2008, was earlier chief minister of Rajasthan twice - 1981-85 and 1988-89.
