The prolific success of IT industry poster-boy Nandan Nilekani has caught the imagination of the masses, who voted him as the most-favourite Indian business leader, while Mukesh Ambani and industry doyen Ratan Tata were adjudged Global Indian and Indian Business Leader respectively at the NDTV Profit awards.

In fact, Nilekani also received the best IT company award for the success of Infosys from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

While Ratan Tata was not present to receive the Business Leader award from the Prime Minister, Singh had a word of praise for the industry doyen: "The few who have faced competition, survived and have grown in size and stature like my friend Ratan Tata. They exemplify the best and brightest of Indian business."

Receiving the coveted Global Indian award, Ambani termed India as a country of a "billion opportunities" and said liberalisation and "the energy of young people" was moving the country ahead.

NDTV handed out awards in 14 broad categories across the Indian industry, including Best Aviation Award to Jet Airways whose chairman Naresh Goyal profusely thanked the Prime Minister on the dais for helping him get the clearances and enable his company to fly.

Arch-rival Air Sahara, engaged in a legal battle on collapse of its takeover by Jet, was one of the other nominees in the aviation award category.

Accepting the award, Nilekani said India was in the midst of a great opportunity and urged the business community to move forward globally with greater pace. "Hope we take full advantage," he said.
