A pall of gloom descended on Deoghar’s Satsang Ashram on Monday after nine people, including eight women, died and about 25 were injured after a stampede broke out at the ashram.

Thousands of devotees had assembled on the ashram premises to take part in celebrations marking the 125th birth anniversary of Thakur Anukul Chandra.

Sources said more than 1 lakh devotees from across the country were waiting outside the ashram’s main gate since Sunday night. As soon as the gate was opened around 5am, a mad rush swept across the premises, leaving nine people dead.

“The deceased died of suffocation,” the deputy commissioner said, adding that the ashram had not requested any administrative support.

“The ashram management had not asked for the deployment of additional forces on the occasion. It was a private function,” Deoghar superintendent of police Subodh Kumar said.
