Shinde insisted there was “no need” to re-investigate the case in which 33-year-old school teacher Mirza Himayat Baig was sentenced. Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal, however, told his interrogators that it wasn’t Baig but an IM operative Qateel Siddiqui who had planted the bomb that killed 17 people.

Maharashtra home minister RR Patil, however, has opposed a fresh probe that could indict Mumbai police. “In a case that has been proven in court, police and the government do not feel the need for further investigation,” Patil had said.

Besides political embarrassment, government sources suggested a fresh probe would raise questions on convictions.
