Official sources said the government would bring a bill in the assembly's winter session this month to amend the law so that courts can record the statements of prisoners without their having to leave the jails.

This will minimise the risks associated with transporting these criminals over long distances to courts. The sources said about 50 prisoners have escaped from custody during such transportation in the last five years.

And once they ditch the police, it becomes easy for the prisoners to literally vanish in the mountain terrains of the hill state.
