NSD artists stage play depicting Peshwa rule

ARTISTS OF the National School of Drama (NSD) staged a play ?Ghasiram Kotwal? at the Nagari Natak Mandali auditorium here on Sunday evening. The play depicted hypocrisy in society during the rule of Peshwa chieftain Nana Phadnavis .

ARTISTS OF the National School of Drama (NSD) staged a play ‘Ghasiram Kotwal’ at the Nagari Natak Mandali auditorium here on Sunday evening. The play depicted hypocrisy in society during the rule of Peshwa chieftain Nana Phadnavis .

At the outset of the play, some Brahmins arrive at the Kotha of Gulabi Bai where Nana his ankle. Gulabi Bai’s Kannauj Brahmin servant, Ghasiram, does not let him fall on the ground. Nana presents him a necklace.

However, Gulabi Bai and gangsters of the Kotha snatch it. Moreover, Pune Brahmins conspire to declare Ghasiram a thief. He is publicly humiliated.

Ghasiram vows revenge. He gets his daughter to submit to the lust of Nana in order to secure the office of Kotwal for Ghasiram. Later, Ghasiram becomes a tyrant. Nana orders that Ghasiram be paraded through the city and hanged. The play is written by Vijay Tendulkar and directed by Rajender Nath.
