Odisha minister gets bail three days after arrest on dowry harassment charges

Three days after they were arrested on alleged dowry harassment charges, former Odisha law minister Raghunath Mohanty and his wife Pritilata Mohanty on Tuesday were granted bail by a court in Odisha’s Balasore district, reports Priya Ranjan Sahu.

Three days after they were arrested on alleged dowry harassment charges, former Odisha law minister Raghunath Mohanty and his wife Pritilata Mohanty on Tuesday were granted bail by a court in Odisha’s Balasore district.

The 64-year-old senior Biju Janata Dal leader had resigned from the state cabinet on March 15 after his daughter-in-law Barsa Soni Choudhury (23) lodged a dowry harassment complaint against him, his wife, son, daughter and son-in-law at the Balasore town police station, about 200km east of Bhubaneswar.

Following public outcry, chief minister Naveen Patnaik had transferred the case to the Human Rights Protection Cell of the state police to “ensure free and fair investigation”.

While the HRPC arrested Mohanty’s son Raja Sree Mohanty (28) on March 17 from Cuttack, the former minister and his wife were arrested from Kolkata on March 30. Mohanty’s daughter Rupasree Madual and her husband Subhendu Madual are still at large.

Following his arrest, Patnaik removed Mohanty from the post of vice president of BJD.
