In her complaint, Minati Naik (37), sarpanch of the Alailo gram panchayat, about 130 km east of Bhubaneswar, said after being elected sarpanch last year, she wanted to serve the people but her husband, along with some unscrupulous elements, had hijacked the gram panchayat and started collecting money from people.

“My husband, Amiya Kumar Nayak, has barred me from attending the panchayat meetings and takes important decisions by himself. When I opposed that, I was humiliated, tortured physically and mentally and kept as a prisoner in the house.”

Talking to HT, Kendrapada collector Niranjan Nayak said he received the complaint by post from her three days ago. “I have ordered the district panchayat officer to start a probe.”
