"The results were not according to our expectations,” the outgoing chief minister said after submitting her resignation to governor BL Joshi on Wednesday.

“After the notification of the assembly elections, the Congress raised the issue of quota for Muslims. The BJP tried to rope in the upper castes and OBCs to oppose it,” she said.

Fearing that the BJP might capture power with the upper castes and OBCs, 70% Muslims voted for the Samajwadi Party (SP). They thought the Congress was not in position to check the BJP, said Mayawati.

As for the SP, their upper caste and OBC candidates also drew support from their own communities as well, she said.
Mayawati blamed the media for “hyping” the reservation issue.
