Only 3 pc kidney patients get access to transplant

Talking to mediapersons here on Monday, Prof Singh said that poverty was the main reason behind the poor rate of kidney transplant in India. He said that only 600 to 1000 patients—which is around 2 to 3 percent of all the patients—have access to the kidney transplant facility in India every year.
Prof Singh said that IMS-BHU was the first centre where transplantation of kidney was executed under the supervision of late Prof KN Udupa some 41 years ago in 1965 in the country. He said there were around 24 kidney transplantation centres across the country and claimed that BHU Centre was extending the cheapest kidney transplantation facility.
“While in other centres, the cost of transplantation is around Rs 5 lakh, in BHU this facility is available at around Rs 1 lakh”, he said. Kidney transplantation programme was re-introduced in IMS-BHU in the year 1999 and since then 39 transplantations had been conducted here, he said and added that a separate transplantation clinic was set up at Sir Sunderlal Hospital, affiliated to IMS-BHU.
Prof Singh claimed all the post-operation test facilities were available at SS Hospital and patients had 24-hour access to the consultant after transplantation. “Experts of other fields such as Urology, Immunology, Anaesthesiology, Nephrology, Radiology and Central Laboratory are part of the kidney transplantation team of BHU”, he added.
