Panchayat solemnises marriage of a couple

At a time when Khap panchayats are issuing diktats for honour killings, a village panchayat in the district has set an example by extending a helping hand to a couple, whose relationship was opposed to by their parents, and got them married before the whole village.

Arti and Gajraj, both belonging to the same caste and residents of Kewalpur village, were in love for over two years. Due to opposition by their family members over their relationship they could not marry, Panchyat member, Manoj Bajpai said.

The couple, however, got married in a court and later returned to the village last week to convince their parents but their attempts went in vain. The couple then appealed to the elderly people of the village to call a panchyat over the issue.

The panchayat summoned parents of both bride and the groom and got the marriage solemnised in front of the entire village.

Earlier, last week Fatteypur panchayat of the district had done the similar job.
