A PhD scholar was gunned down by some youths at the Chaudhary Charan Singh University on Tuesday and hours later a police team raided the suspect's residence where a gun battle ensued in which a constable and the suspect's father were killed.

Sanjeev Gujjar, the PhD scholar, was shot dead outside the RK Hostel in the CCU campus by two unidentified youth on Tuesday morning, police said.

Police raided the house of Neeraj Malik, who is suspected to have carried out the attack, where Malik's father Dheeraj Malik fired at them killing a constable on the spot, Superintendent of Police (city) US Jaiswal said.

Police retaliated killing Tomar on the spot.

The deceased constable was identified as Parveen Giri.
