Pink autos for women to go up from 22 to 50

Come July, women commuters will be able to spot more women-only pink autos in the city. To ensure safety of women, the Gurgaon traffic police will revive the much-needed Pink Auto Service and has also decided to raise the number from existing 22 to 50 in the first week of July. Come July, women commuters will be able to spot more women-only pink autos in the city. To ensure safety of women, the Gurgaon traffic police will revive the much-needed Pink Auto Service and has also decided to raise the number from existing 22 to 50 in the first week of July.

The pink autos in Gurgaon were reintroduced on January 12 after a gap of one-and-a-half-year. The project was restarted after several requests by women to the traffic police.

The autos were first introduced in December 2010, but didn't succeed. Initially, only 10 pink autos were introduced. Gradually, their numbers touched to 50 but in no time they were converted into normal autos.

Pink autos would be parked right at the Metro stations. These autos offer discounts on festivals like Karwa Chauth, Diwali and Women's Day. Women passengers get special treatment by the drivers on these occasions and are served mineral water bottles also.

The credential of all pink auto drivers is verified by the traffic police and they are for the round-the-clock services for women.

No male passenger is allowed to travel in pink autos and action would be taken against anyone found travelling, said police. The tariff is also economical as compared to other autos.

ACP (Traffic) Ravinder Tomar said, "At a time, only three women passengers would be allowed to travel in the auto. If any driver refuses to take women passengers, they can dial 100 to lodge a complaint against the driver."
