The boy is the son of a naval officer.

Though no police complaint was registered till late Tuesday evening, Sector 4 Station House Officer Dinesh Kumar said he would go to check if is indeed a pistol or an air gun.

Kumar said he had taken cognisance of the matter after persistent media queries. “I called up the principal Shashi Tyagi. He could not say what gun it was. I will go and find out,” he said.

A school official said a meeting of the disciplinary committee had been called on Wednesday to decide the future course of action. The boy's parents had been asked to be present at the meeting. According to the school official, the teacher taking the last class of the day got suspicious of the boy's behaviour and checked his back.

"The boy told us that he got the pistol by somebody from outside the school," the school official said. "The matter is yet to be investigated further," he added. School headmistress Karuna Sharma called the meeting of all teachers on Tuesday and told them to remain alert and keep an eye on the movement of students. In December 2007, two class VIII students of a reputed Gurgaon school had shot their classmate in the school premises.
