Police fired warning shots and tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters in Jammu and Kashmir staging a brief, but rowdy demonstration against the national election on Wednesday.

"We want freedom! No election!" the protesters shouted in the town of Bijbehara, in the sole Kashmiri constituency voting in Wednesday's third round of the five-stage national poll.

There were no injuries and the town was peaceful, but deserted after the rally was broken up. No further details were available.
