The incident took place in the wee hours when the gang, moving on three motorcycles, overpowered the driver of an SUV transporting the bar girls to their respective homes, Kormangala police said.

Two constables and an inspector sustained injuries as the gang attacked them with deadly weapons, they said, adding that the gang members had gained control of the SUV soon after they left Hotel Ashoka Regency. Police, acting on a tip-off, chased the vehicle as it moved out of the city.

The gang also contacted the hotel owner seeking ransom in exchange for the girls.

The police said two members of the gang also sustained injuries as the police retaliated. Sources claimed that shots were fired when the police intercepted the SUV but the police were yet to confirm it.

The Kormangala police have arrested six persons identified as Waseem, Saeed, Inayat, Tipu, Sikandar and Javed Sheikh. Waseem and Saeed are known to have a history of crime.

The abduction attempt came at a time when the police had launched an operation against unlicensed dance bars and arrested nearly two dozen bar girls and hotel owners in the last six months.
