Powermen to stage demo at Parliament on March 1

Over one lakh power employees from all over the country are expected to take part in the demonstration.
Union leaders of power companies from all over the country will address a rally to be held before the demonstration at Ram Lila ground in Delhi.
Power sector employees have been demanding scrapping of the Electricity Act 2003. Apart from this, they have also been demanding rollback of privatisation process of power sector.
Expressing concern over dissolution of electricity boards, employees have been demanding re-constitution of the boards.
KESCo employees will also take part in the rally under the banner of Powermen’s Joint Action Committee.
Senior leader Shailendra Dubey and others will represent the power corporations’ employees.
On May 17, the then Power Minister PM Sayeed had assured us that the Electricity Act 2003 would be scrapped after six months, Dubey said.
But again in December last year, the Energy ministry extended the Act by another six months, Dubey added.
“Despite repeated requests, new Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has ignored our request to hold talks on the issue,” he added.
Therefore, power employees were forced to stage a demonstration at Parliament, he said.
A resolution to go on a nationwide strike in May would also be passed, Dubey added.
From Kanpur, senior leaders of the Powermen’s Joint Action Committee, including Puse Lal, Vijay Tripathi and Bhagwan Mishra will take part in the rally.
“The Energy ministry has misled the power employees on several occasions in the past. Now, the power employees are in no mood to relent. Hundreds of employees from KESCo will take part in the demonstration,” Puse Lal said.
Senior members of the National Coordination Committee of the Electricity Employees and Engineers, including CPI leader AB Bardhan, will also attend the rally.
