The unofficial results showed candidates from the pro-monarchist Rastriya Prajatantra Party winning 25 seats while four candidates also from the government-supporting Nepal Sadbhawana were elected mayors.

The remaining 29 were either from very small parties or independent, but many of them are believed to be supporting King Gyanendra, who took over absolute power last year.

The municipal election on last Wednesday was boycotted by the major opposition political parties and voter turnout was low.
