Atleast 90 per cent leukaemia patients survive if they were given proper and timely treatment, said Dr BK Mishra, consultant oncologist at Regional Cancer Centre, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital here.
He was delivering a lecture on the 'Management of Acute Leukaemia and Bone Marrow Transplantation', at the fourth scientific meet of Allahabad Medical Association (AMA), on Sunday.
Dr Mishra said some major efforts need to be made to bring down the cost of leukaemia treatment. "Normally the treatment cost ranges between Rs 4 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, due to which many patients are unable to afford it. The bone marrow transplantation facility is also not available in Allahabad," he added.
Dr Mishra also gave some useful guidelines for the management of leukaemia patients.
AMA secretary Dr VK Gupta said for the first time in Allahabad 'apheresis' instrument would be soon installed at the AMA blood bank. The apheresis process involves the removal of whole blood from a patient or donor and then one of the required component is withdrawn from the blood.
The remaining components are retransfused into the patient or donor. This technique is very useful for leukaemia patients, he informed.
The session was chaired by Dr Bajaj. Dr BP Agarwal presided over the programme. The programme was conducted by scientific secretary Dr RC Gupta.
In the evening AMA organised HIV workshop for city doctors.
