Gandhi spent more than three hours with scores of people who had lined up at a Guest House, where the young MP is staying.

He is also scheduled to hold a separate meeting with Panchayat leaders and discuss with them ways to strengthen the Panchayati Raj Institutions.

He will visit some villages later in the day.

Gandhi launched his three-day mass contact programme in Amethi on Wednesday mingling with villagers and assuring all help to them in speedy development of their areas.

On Wednesday, Gandhi toured a number of villages concentrating mainly on dwellings of Dalits and backward classes.

In his characteristic style, Gandhi walked into the dusty swathe of his constituency reminding villagers of the manner in which his father Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi had interacted with them.

Chatting with residents of Barsanda village, he said he was concerned about lack of development in the area and asked them to adopt new techniques for better results, in particular in the field of agriculture.
