Rains wreak havoc in Mandi district

Heavy rains on Saturday and Sunday have destroyed agricultural and horticultural crops in many villages across the district.

Heavy rains on Saturday and Sunday have destroyed agricultural and horticultural crops in many villages across the district.

The rains caused landslides, besides damaging houses, bridges, drinking water lifting schemes and electricity supply lines in far flung areas of the district.

Rainwater and slush entered in few shops and ground floor of zonal hospital, Mandi, on Sunday morning. Local MLA and panchyati raj minister Anil Sharma visited the spot and ordered public works department engineer to channelise the nullah near the hospital to avoid flooding.

Many villages under Seraj, Drang, Sarkaghat and Karsog segments remained without water and electricity supply for the second day due to heavy rains in the area. There was threat to areas along the Beas river.

Meanwhile, Mandi-Pathankot national highway (NH), Mandi-Jallandhar NH-70 and Chandigarh-Manali NH-21 remained partially blocked and the administration advised commuters against travelling in night hours.
