Eyewitnesses said the train, running at a speed between
90 and 100 kmph, hit the auto-rickshaw as its driver tried
to negotiate the crossing at Khaira near Dandkhora railway station, about 250 km east of Patna.
The train dragged the rickshaw for almost 200 metres, they added.
Bodies of the victims, all passengers of the auto-rickshaw, lay scattered on both sides of the tracks.
“Many people have been killed,” Dandkhora Station House Officer Faiyaz Alam said, adding that bodies of 12 victims had been recovered.
“Some of the bodies were disfigured beyond recognition,” he said.
While Katihar Divisional Manager B. Patil could not be reached despite several attempts to contact him, Rail Deputy Superintendent of Police Satyadeo Pandey confirmed the death of only seven people in the mishap.
