MAYOR DR Uma Shashi Sharma toured the Manikbag overbridge on Thursday for a last minute review before the facility is thrown open to the public on March 14. Mayor-in-Council members and Municipal Commissioner Vinod Sharma accompanied her.

The overbridge is to be dedicated to the public by BJP national president Rajnath Singh in the presence of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The long-overdue inauguration will provide much-needed relief to commuters who are currently obliged to take a long detour despite the construction of the overbridge - all because the local BJP leadership wants to earn political brownie points.
Although the facility has been ready for nearly two months, the Mayor has been stalling the opening in the search for a suitably high-profile leader to inaugurate the ambitious project.

In fact, the manner in which inaugurators were proposed, only to be dropped in hope of a greater catch, would have been quite funny if innocent citizens weren’t being made to pay the price.

Initially, Chauhan was the IMC’s choice for cutting the ribbon. When it got wind of President A P J Abdul Kalam’s visit to the City, however, the Corporation set its heart on getting Manikbag inaugurated by the savant.

After the President cancelled his visit owing to an injury, Dr Sharma decided to rope in former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for kick-starting the overbridge as well as the eponymous Atal Sports Complex. The Mayor even travelled to Delhi to extend an invite to Vajpayee, but the trip didn’t pan out for reasons that remained unclear.

Meanwhile, resentment mounted among motorists at being denied access to the overbridge even though it was ready for use. Gauging the public mood, Congress party organised several demonstrations and the protests threatened to snowball into a large-scale agitation.

Perhaps sensing that any further lag would harm their political interests the BJP leadership hurriedly arranged for the overbridge to be inaugurated by Rajnath Singh.
