Research to revolutionise treatment of arterial diseases

A new law of the 'Effects of Arterial Pulsatory Power on Arterial Internal Structure' has been established by Dr Keshav Kumar, professor and head of Department of Anatomy, Moti Lal Nehru Medical College, here.

The new law will provide a new direction to the research work regarding structure, function, disease and treatment of arteries in future. The research paper was also published in the Journal of Anatomical Society of India. These laws would revolutionise the way artery diseases were treated earlier, claimed Prof Keshav Kumar.

Addressing the mediapersons here on Saturday Dr Keshav Kumar said after extensive research on the effects of arterial pulsatory power three main conclusions were drawn. These were the number of elastic fibres situated in tunica media (middle layer of the arterial wall) of an artery is never affected by pulsatory power of than artery, pulsatory power of an artery certainly affects number of smooth muscle fibres situated in tunica media of that artery and arterial segments having equal length and equal pulsatory power have equal number of smooth muscle fibres in their tunica media.

"Above-mentioned laws have been discovered for the first time in the world. These laws would help in reducing arterial aging process by controlling pulse pressure of blood and revolutionise the treatment of arterial sclerosis, arterial arthero sclerosis and hardening and inelastic narrowing of the lumen of artery. It was also seen that due to formation of atheroma the flow of blood gets affected in the organs situated near the affected artery. These laws would also throw a light on the arterial internal structure and effects of arterial pulsatory power," he further added.

Dr Keshav Kumar said the paper on this was published in the Journal of Anatomical Society of India in 2002.
