Residents protest demolition drive

Congress MLA to take up issue with chief minister

ENRAGED OVER the anti-encroachment drive of the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) at Gopal Nagar and its adjoining areas on Thursday, hundreds of local residents along with Congress MLA Ajay Kapoor, staged a demonstration.

The anti-encroachment squad of the KDA carried out a demolition drive on Thursday at Gopal Nagar, Chisti Nagar, Savitri Nagar and RK Puram and razed down several illegal structures. But the local residents have claimed that they had purchased the land from a society and were bonafide residents of the area.

Local residents also demanded that the KDA should regularise their land and fix betterment charges.

The locals also accused the KDA officials of harassment. The wanted that the district administration should immediately intervene in the matter.

Peeved over the KDA's action hundreds of local residents reached the house of Congress MLA Ajay Kapoor and expressed their resentment over the KDA drive.

After talking to the agitated resident, the Congress MLA led them in a procession to the KDA and staged a demonstration on its campus .

The Congress MLA rejected KDA secretary Bhupinder Singh's offer to hold talks. He demanded that the KDA VC Deepak Kumar should holds talks with him.

After the meeting, Kapoor informed that the KDA VC had assured him to take up the matter with the State Government.

Kapoor also assured the agitators that he would personally take up the matter with the Chief Minister and apprise him of the situation.

The controversy arose when KDA claimed that the land belonged to the Gram Samaj and therefore all houses constructed on it were illegal.

But the residents have claimed that they had purchased the land from society and regularly pay house tax to the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC).

Residents also claimed that had being paying electricity bills regularly to the Kesco.

Residents also issued a warning to the KDA to refrain from launching drive or else be prepared for the consequences.
