Rooney World Cup fitness tied to scan: Eriksson

Wayne Rooney's World Cup future looks set to be decided by a scan on his broken foot on May 25.

Wayne Rooney's World Cup future looks set to be decided by a scan on his broken foot on May 25.

The England striker has not traveled with the rest of Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad to a pre-tournament training camp at Vale Do Lobo on the Portuguese Algarve.

But there is growing hope that he could yet feature in the World Cup finals despite initial reports that his injury, suffered on April 29 against Chelsea, would take a minimum of six weeks to heal.

The Manchester United forward has been working hard on his fitness and now England head coach Eriksson has named the day when a decision may have to be made.

He said: "On May 25 we will know much more of the situation, that is the date of his next scan.

"I have always been positive. But not for medical reasons - I have been positive because he will do absolutely everything to try to get fit as quickly as possible.

"Wayne Rooney not in the World Cup, I don't think he even believes that will be the truth. Of course he should be there.

"I spoke to him last time last week and he is working hard, doing everything I asked him to do and maybe even more.

"Of course he is desperate to play in the World Cup, he is one of the best players in the world and he wants to compete with Ronaldinho and Ronaldo. He wants to be on that stage and it's understandable."

Eriksson is so hopeful about Rooney's chances that he will not make any decisions about the formation his team play at the World Cup until news comes through about the striker's fitness.

If Rooney recovers he is certain to partner Michael Owen up front but if he is unable to play then Peter Crouch could replace him in a straight 4-4-2 formation or Joe Cole or Steven Gerrard could move further forward in a more flexible system.

Eriksson said: "We can't make any decisions until we know. Of course I hope we play Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen up front, that's the best formation we have got.

"But I don't have a date when Rooney will join the squad. It's difficult to say today because we have to wait until after May 25 to see the scan. I think we will be much more clever after that."
