The event will provide a platform to experts from diverse background to discuss strategies, policies and actions to prevent infringement upon copyright, trademarks and patents in broadcasting areas. Former chairman of AICTE Prof SK Khanna will be the chief guest at the inaugural function while Madhukar Sinha of the Union Ministry of HRD will deliver the keynote address.

Co-ordinator of the seminar Anurika Vaish said, “The seminar will help everyone to recognise and understand the role of IPR in the country’s development programme, highlight research and educational accomplishments in the field of IPR and broadcasting rights as well as promote awareness about licensing and distribution loopholes with reference to broadcasting rights. Deliberations on how the absence of R&D is adding up to the IPR problem in India will also take place,” she added.

Anurika said, “IPR is the right of the people over their intellectual creations. Ideas which are abstract representation of something can be protected once they materialise as a result of human intellectual effort. The material realisation of an idea can certainly benefit from IPR protection.”

Elaborating on the existing state of affairs, she said that in recent years, the environment in which economic activity occured had changed notably. “Due to the move towards a knowledge-based economy in the 21st century, IPRs enjoy a growing importance around the globe. This change affects all areas of creative work in the field of entertainment (music, books, films), research and development (patents, inventions) and marketing (trademarks, brands, etc),” she added.

Anurika informed that the seminar was aimed at musicians, film-makers, software solution providers, legal consultants and other professionals having interest in developing policies that would make the world of IPR more inclusive and appreciative of the contribution of intellectuals.

The speakers who will present their views include director of Resource Centre for Media Education and Research Keval J Kumar, GM Prasar Bharti GG Saxena, AIR director Karuna Srivastava, former CEO BAG Films Avinash Mehrotra, director Patents and IPR Cell, MIT Dr RC Tripathi and director Doordarshan Kamalini Dutt.
