An 81-year-old woman was killed and a 63-year-old man was injured in two separate accidents on the Eastern Express Highway in Vikhroli since Wednesday.
The first accident took place around 9.50am on Wednesday. Draupadibai P Hodgare, who was staying with her relatives in Kanamavar Nagar in Vikhroli (East), was crossing the busy highway when she was knocked down by a car driven by Vinayak Digrajkar, 32, an HR professional from Thane, police said.
The accident took place on the southbound stretch of the highway.
“The woman was tossed up in the air and she landed on the windshield of the car, a Volkswagen Vento. A panicked Digrajkar fled the spot with blood stains on the bonnet of his car. A witness managed to note the registration number of the vehicle and notified us,” said Mahipak Indalkar, senior inspector, Vikhroli police
“We immediately alerted the police stations and traffic police about the incident. A few policemen spotted Digrajkar parked alongside the road in Ghatkopar. He was talking on the phone and was caught immediately,” he added.
The police have registered an offence in this regard and stated that Digrajkar was not drunk while driving his vehicle.
In the second incident, which took place on Thursday afternoon, Gopalkrishna Shetty, 63, was knocked down by a speeding car heading towards Thane.
Shetty’s condition is critical. He is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mulund, the Vikhroli police said.
Shetty, who sells tea, was crossing the road when the Maruti WagonR driven by Shridhar Pawar, 33, hit him.
According to the police, such accidents continue to take place on the highway as most pedestrians refuse to take the road overbridges. “There is a bridge, but people cross the road and continue to risk their lives. It is very difficult for a driver to control his vehicle when he is driving at high speed. We have conducted awareness campaign, but people do not listen,” said Indalkar.
