Sensex in the red, sheds early gains

The benchmark Sensex failed to hold early gains and lost over 172 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Monday on selling by funds as well as retail investors.

The 30-share sensitive index, Sensex, which rose by over 111 points in early trading, fell back to quote 172.95 points down at 13,441.57 in the first 30 minutes of trading.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange, Nifty, declined by 52.60 points at 3,836.05.

Major losers, which dragged the Sensex down were, Infosys Technologies, HDFC Ltd, Bajaj Auto, ACC, State Bank of India, Maruti Udyog, BHEL, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy, Dr Reddy's Lab, Larsen and Toubro, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries and Reliance Energy.
