SGPC to meet PM over French turban ban

Bibi Jagir Kaur said SGPC would also raise the issue with French embassy in India.

Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee, the apex body of Sikhs, will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to request him to take up with the French Government the issue of ban on wearing turbans in schools there.

"We would meet with the prime minister and request him to take up the matter of ban on wearing turbans in schools with the French Government," SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur told reporters in Dehra Dun, while reacting to expulsion of Sikh students in France over wearing turbans.

She said that the SGPC would also raise the issue with French embassy in India and also hold demonstrations in order to exert pressure on France to take back this "unfair" law.

She said the SGPC would not sit quietly over the issue and would move to the United Nations if the controversial law is not rescinded by the French government.

A Sikh delegation would visit France on the issue, she said.
