Sikkim youth to represent India in Taekwondo

Twenty-year-old Rupen Pradhan from Sikkim will represent India in 17th World Taekwondo Championship to be held at Madrid from April 13 to 17, 2005.

Earlier, Pradhan has represented India in Taekwondo Championships held at Taipei, Taiwan in 2001, (Junior Asian Championship), 9th South Asian Games held at Pakistan in 2004, and 16th Asian Taekwondo Championship held at Korea in 2004 (Senior Asian Championship).

Pradhan, who has been selected to represent India in Fin weight Category, had taken up Taekwondo as a sport at the tender age of 9 years, under the watchful eyes of Trilok Subba, Chief Coach of Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association President.

He was first selected by the Taekwondo Federation of India for SAI after winning national medal representing Sikkim.

Rupen Pradhan bagged Gold Medals in seven major events from the year 2002 to 2004 and is the National Champion of India. He won the National Championship in the National Games held at Hyderabad in 2002 and won a gold medal in the 9th South Asian Federation Games held at Rawalpindi in 2004.

While talking with the media, Chief Coach Trilok Subba said that he was hopeful that Rupen Pradhan would bring home Gold Medal from Madrid and enhance the image of India in world sports.
