Film actor Salman Khan, who was jailed for killing a chinkara, said he would have broken out of jail had he known the true nature of his mother's illness.

"They told me that my mother was ill but they did not tell me up to what extent, and that she was hospitalised.

"If I would have known that, perhaps I would have broken down and broken out of jail," Khan said in an interview to a TV channel.

Asked whether he was worried about his mother, he said "my mother is made of Gabriel shock-absorbers. I am sure she is fine now. She went through a big ditch. I spoke to her. She is okay now. So I will go back and spend some time with her."

The Bollywood actor said he toured the jail and met people who have been imprisoned for several years.

"There are people who are 60 plus, who cannot even stand, who cannot walk. That saddened me and gave me the will to survive three days, 10 days, 25 days," he said.

Khan said it was difficult to see people sentenced for 20 years for mistakes committed in past, when they were 18 or 19 years old.

"It might take, even for the most hardened criminals, just three months or at the most six months to straighten-up," the actor said.

He said he would like to send some television sets and get some bathrooms and toilets organised for the inmates of the jail. "This is something I want to do and I will do it. This is the first thing I will do when I get back to Mumbai."
