The girl, Jhunni Kumari’s body was found stuffed in a gunny bag in a sugarcane field on the outskirts of Khagani village in the district.

Her head had been tonsured and vermilion applied on her forehead. The police also recovered materials used to perform the puja.

Jhunni, daughter of Ram Lal Mahto, had been missing since August 12.

Villagers said Ram Pukar Mahto, the victim’s uncle, wanted to achieve mastery over ‘super-natural skills’ by sacrificing a minor girl.

During interrogation, Ram Pukar told the police that he kidnapped Jhunni, taken her to a secluded place and killed her.

Additional Director General of Police Neelmani in Patna said a part of the girl’s leg had been chopped off. “Two persons, including an alleged sorcerer, have been arrested for sacrificing a minor girl,” he said.

East Champaran Superintendent of Police Umesh Kumar said the two accused, Ram Pukar Mahto and his ‘tantrik guru’ Mangal Sah have been taken into custody.

Shanti Devi, the victim’s mother, had lodged a complaint against Sah, Ram Lakhan Mahto and Ram Pukar Mahto.

“Raids are on to arrest others involved in the incident,” Kumar said.
