Following conviction of former Union Minister Sukhram, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, in a disproportionate assets case on Friday, the BJP state unit here said it will make the case a poll issue against Congress.
State BJP president Jairam Thakur, a native of Mandi like Sukhram, said it would give the party a stick to beat its rival with.
However, senior HP Congress member and leader of the opposition Vidya Stokes said the court’s decision on Sukhram would have no adverse impact on the party in the Parliamentary elections.
“It is an old case and people had voted him after the case in the past...besides, Sukhram is going to appeal against the order in higher court, hence it would be wrong to curse him for this,” Stokes told reporters here.
She also ruled out suspending Sukhram from Congress.
HP Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said Sukhram always alleged that a section of his own party men “conspired” against him to implicate him in the case to finish him politically.
Dhumal, who would be spearheading BJP campaign for the LS polls in HP, told reporters that Sukhram’s case would be raised in the elections.
