This refers to the report Centre to curb prices with more imports (January 14). The unprecedented rise in the prices of food items is the result of the government’s faulty or non-existent agriculture policy. It is incredible that in spite of farmers being keen on growing crops, as it is more profitable for them, the production of food crops is declining. If we claim to be an emerging economy, our nation should at least be self-sufficient in food production. It’s strange that despite being technologically sound and equipped with several agricultural research institutes, our country has to battle inflation. We are producing an increasing number of billionaires every year, but our human development index (HDI) is same as most impoverished African nations. The government should focus on both GDP as well as HDI growth before making tall claims about being self-sufficient.
