Beer drinking dates back to the sixth millennium BC and has been recorded in the earliest Sumerian writings. It has also been mentioned in the Code of Hammurabi, which dates back to 1700 BC. In fact, the ancient Sumerian Goddess Ninkasi is considered the ‘matron goddess of the intoxicating beverage’, i.e. beer. Hymns sung to her were also a way for people to remember the recipe for the drink. The earliest chemically confirmed barley beer to date was discovered at Godin Tepe in the central Zagros Mountains of Iran, ca. 3400 - 3000 B.C. (Chalcolithic/Late Uruk Period).
The tradition of celebrating International Beer Day on August 5 started in 2007 at a pub in Santa Cruz, California, USA.
