MEMBERS OF the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in the country will be given training for diagnosis and primary treatment of HIV/AIDS.
Training will be given under a project conducted by the IMA’s medical specialty wing along with monitory support from the Clinton Foundation. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed and representative office of the Clinton Foundation has already been opened in New Delhi for the project.
“It has been observed that doctors often shy away from giving treatment and counselling to the HIV patients. HIV actually is not the condition of AIDS but it needs proper attention to restrict the transformation of HIV into AIDS,” said the national chairman of the IMA Academy of Medical Specialty, Dr RD Dubey.
Dr RD Dubey was in the city today to attend the 74th Foundation Day celebration of IMA’s Lucknow Chapter.
Dr Dubey said that the blue print of the training programme has already been prepared. He said each state secretary of IMA would select two member doctors for the training in the first phase. They would be imparted training at a national workshop, he added.
Dr Dubey said the trained doctors would then conduct workshops in each branch to make the doctors aware about the facility regarding the treatment of HIV/AIDS.
Dr Dubey said that doctors did not even know about the referral and sample testing centers, though it existed in every State. The training workshops will be of two days and only 50 doctors will be taken in each batch for the training. Wherever required a branch will hold two separate training workshops to share the knowledge with other doctors. In Uttar Pradesh alone there are 140 branches of IMA and half of them have nearly 200 doctors attached. The programme will get approximately Rs 20 crore fund for the workshops while experts will be provided by the IMA itself.

An umbrella organisation — Federation of Medical Association (FOMA) — has been formed where various organisations of cardiologists, neurologists, surgeons and physiologists will join us,” he said.d. “This will automatically make members of other medical organisations a member of IMA, thereby strengthening the largest network of doctors in the country.”
