Kunal Chakraborty was kidnapped by unidentified armed guerrillas on early Tuesday at Molnom, 145 km from Imphal, and taken to a nearby jungle. He managed to escape late Tuesday.

"Armed militants abducted Dr Kunal Chakraborty when a group of RIMS (Regional Institute of Medical Science in Imphal) students led by him were returning to Imphal from a rural health centre at Saikot in Churachandpur district in southern Manipur," a police official said.

"Chakraborty managed to escape from the clutches of the rebels when they were otherwise busy," the official said.

Chakraborty, a doctor of Gobinda Ballav Pant medical college and hospital in Agartala, joined RIMS some months ago for a postgraduate degree course.

Manipur police and Assam Rifles troopers have jointly launched a combing operation to nab the extremists.
