The incumbent managing director (MD) HM Nerurkar is due to retire next month.
The board has also appointed group chief financial officer Koushik Chatterjee as the group executive director, finance and corporate. Chatterjee was earlier seen as favourite to succeed Nerurkar.
With effect from November 1, Karl Koehler, MD and CEO at Tata Steel Europe, Narendran and Chatterjee will all report to chairman Cyrus Mistry, Tata Steel said in a statement to the exchanges.
