Concerned over killing of hundreds of civilians by Israeli military action, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has warned it undermines the Palestinian institutions, which must be preserved if a two-state solution to the conflict is to be achieved.

Annan particularly expressed concerned over the arrest of Speaker of the Palestinian Council Dr Aziz Dweik.

In a statement, he criticised firing of rockets from Gaza, which have "indiscriminately" targeted Israeli civilians, and called for cessation of hostilities and resumption of dialogue to resolve the issue.

The tragic events in occupied territories, Lebanon and Israel, he said, show the urgent need for a comprehensive peace process to be revived as soon as possible.
