Varma eyes Rome
Suneet Varma has designs on the international market and is all set to unveil his collection at the Alto Roma Fashion Week.
Delhi-based fashion designer Suneet Varma has designs on the international market. Varma, who recently dressed Vanisha, steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal’s daughter, for the much-talked-about Paris wedding, is now all set to show his collection at the Alto Roma Fashion Week, to be held in Rome between July 10-18.

Varma would display 42 garments at this couture week, an initiative by the Indo-Italian Chamber called Namaste India. Besides fashion, it will showcase the best of Indian films, food, indigenous wines, tourism and culture.
A jury including members of the Italian Design council and established designers from around the world selected Varma.
“It began with a series of interviews and essays. Of course I had to show all my sketches too. Finally out of several top-of-line designers from the world over I was selected. I must admit it is a great feeling,” says Varma.
Varma will take with him beaded trousers, sexy ornate backless blouses, ponchos and ruffled organza skirts. “To look sexy, one doesn’t always have to show plunging necklines. So this time we have focused on
details like the back, sleeves and Indian work like beads and sequins. Of course, embellishments such as embroidery have been kept to a minimum,” says Varma.
After Tarun Tahiliani’s pret show at Milan last year, Varma will be the first Indian designer to be a part of the Couture Week. “Couture is what I am best at and I want to take a bit of what I desire and am good at internationally too. There isn’t quite a common point of reference in fashion when it comes to the east and west. So I had to work extra hard to portray the best of Indian ensembles to the world,” elaborates Varma.
Varma, who has been living out of suitcases for the past few months, is also looking forward to relaxing at Italian spas.
“Not only do they have the best massages but they also serve the most delicious, sensual pastas,” he adds. n
