Besides, the development funds of MPs and MLAs should be abolished and this money should be utilised for the uplift and development of backward classes and downtrodden sections of the society,” the former PM said.

Addressing a mammoth rally of farmers organised by the Kisan Manch and Bharatiya Samaj Party at Beniabagh grounds here today, VP Singh called upon the backward, downtrodden and poverty-striken people to unite in support of their cause.

“ Despite implementation of the recommendations of the Mandal Commission by the Union Cabinet in the past, the implementation procedure has still some shortcomings, a lot of backward and downtrodden people have not benefited with its implementation,” he said, adding that despite a lot of protest, including a bomb attack in Bihar and stone-pelting in Madhya Pradesh on himself, he implemented it to remove the social inequality which had continued in the Indian society for thousands of years. He warned that the day the deprived classes got united, the entire national scenario would reflect a major change.

He made it clear that Mandal was not based on casteism but on social and education disparity. The deprived people would not succumb to any pressure for getting their rights, he said.

The former PM criticised the decision of the Union Government for importing wheat from Australia at the rate of Rs 950 per quintal while it was procuring it from domestic farmers at the rate of Rs 630. It would bring the Indian farmers to the brink of starvation, he said.

Addressing the meeting, president of Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and former Union Cabinet Minister Choudhary Ajit Singh expressed his anguish that the Union Government had not drafted a policy for the uplift and development of the farmers.

He admitted that progress had taken place in the agricultural sector with modern farming but the farmers in reality had not developed or become prosperous, he said. Unless a policy for the interest of farmers was formulated, the progress of the nation was not possible.
