‘We need to plan as per needs of the entire NCR’
We need to totally reform public transport. We need to plan, design, operate and manage transport facilities for the entire NCR. Nalin Sinha, Director, Initiative for Transportation and Development Programmes (India)india Updated: May 09, 2013 00:24 IST
Despite the Metro and improved bus service, many people still prefer cars.
We need to totally reform public transport. We need to plan, design, operate and manage transport facilities for the entire NCR. It is high time the government prepared a comprehensive integrated transport policy in line with national urban transport policy and Delhi Master Plan of 2021. NCR Planning Board must become more effective
How do we improve public transport?
BRT is inevitable in Delhi. Unlike Metro and monorail, which are cash-intensive projects, are time-consuming and need land acquisition, BRTs can be built in 18 months, are cost-competent and don’t need much land acquisition. We should also consider buying buses of different sizes and revive Ring Railways.
How can last-mile connectivity be improved?
It is time we promoted non-motorised private transport such as bicycles. Some provisions can be made for people to carry foldable cycles in Metro and buses. We also need a proper system for cycle-rickshaws and e-rickshaws.
How important is it to check registration of new vehicles?
We are already late to check the spurt in private vehicles. We are heading towards a man-made disaster. It is time we pressed the panic button. We have to rationalise and increase registration and parking tax. But before such drastic steps, we must launch education programmes for the people. atul mathur
