Incidentally, Banerjee also skipped a similar meeting of the Prime Minister with all state chief ministers on December 7, 2014, where the issue of the probable structure of the NITI Aayog was discussed.

According to sources, it is most likely that West Bengal will be unrepresented at the meeting since the CM is yet to depute anyone on her behalf.

“Generally, at such meetings where the CM is unable to make her presence felt, she deputes the state finance & excise and commerce & industries minister Amit Mitra to give proxy. However, this time, we have no information about her deputing someone,” a senior bureaucrat in the state government said.

Political analysts feel Banerjee’s absence was deliberate, considering her growing distance with the Union government, especially the PM, on the issue of the multi-crore Saradha scam.
