“An interesting incident of a backache led to the creation of the Moti Lal Nehru Medical College. The late chief minister CB Gupta developed a backache during his visit to Allahabad in 1960. He needed diathermy, but as the facility was not available at Colvin and Beli Hospitals, he had to visit a private clinic for treatment.

Upset over the poor medical services in the politically active city, he directed aetting up of a medical college within two months. And this led to the establishment of MLN Medical College at Governor’s House,” said former head of Department of Surgery Prof NK Keswani.
He was speaking at the inaugural function of XIXth Annual Meet of Alumni Association 'Milan-2006' organised by the 20th batch at Prof Pritam Das auditorium here on Sunday.
Prof Keswani said he was fortunate to be the student of first batch of the medical college way back in 1960-61. Since then the college has produced numerous stalwarts who have made their presence felt at national and international level. Some of them include Director General Armed Force Medical Service Vice Admiral Dr VK Singh, Dr Harun and Dr VK Shawal.
"However more facilities like cafeteria and indoor games need to be started at the medical college so that the students could interact with each other more frequently. I also want this alumni association with its glorious past to further grow and work for the welfare of all the members," he added.
Guest of honour and ex-head of Dept of Gynaecology Prof Rama Mishra said teachers play an important role in shaping the future of students. And when a student achieves anything his teacher also feels honoured. "Being born and brought up in the city I have witnessed many incidents in this city. But one thing I realised that if you work with full dedication even in adverse circumstances you will get all the respect from people," she said.
Alumni Association patron and MLN Medical College Principal Dr PC Saxena said the real role of an alumni association is to create a feeling of fraternity among members. Alumni meetings should be organised with a feeling to fill the generation gap and help each other to progress in life, he said.
Alumni Association secretary Dr Sujit Kumar Singh presented report of the association. "In 2005 the association organised prestigious Dr DB Chandra and Prof Preetam Das orations which were delivered by Dr Nagpal and Vice Admiral Dr VK Singh. Funds were also collected for upgrading facilities at the alumni association building," he informed.
Alumni Association president Dr Kamal Jeet Singh gave welcome address. He said it is a moment of nostalgia and to remember the mixed feelings of the students' days. Organising secretary Dr KD Tripathi said the alumni association gives an opportunity to re-establish old ties and do some constructive work for the society. He also proposed a vote of thanks.
