Legal Aid Society, a part of Faculty of Law has been doing some great work as far as helping the common man is concerned. After a successful literacy camp organised in a slum area, another team of the society paid a visit to the Tihar Jail last week.
A team of law students visited the the prison in order to help such inmates who cannot afford the legal procedure due to financial limitations.
As many as forty students of Law Faculty spoke to inmates about their problems, many of whom have been arrested for bailable offence but have not been given bail yet.
The students said that many inmates were ignorant about the legal procedures involved.
In such circumstances, these students come to play an important role as initiators of the process. As part of the Tihar Project, students get an opportunity to deal with real-life cases specially those involving petty crimes like cheating, pick-pocketing and the like.
The procedure starts with
students getting in touch with the investigative officer (IO) of the concerned undertrial.
The IO then guide the law students through other legal aspects of the case.
Going by the response that came from the inmates, the students informed that some of the inmates were quite relieved about getting free legal help whereas others were not.
However, some of the inmates were reluctant to speak to the students considering it to be just a routine assignment.
However, if everything goes in the right direction, there is a chance that some of the inmates might get bailed out of the prison.
