Two persons have been arrested for branding a woman with hot iron and breaking her hand at Bishunpur village in this district.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Kosi range) Sahab Akhtar told PTI on Thursday that two people -Umesh Kamati and Rana Kamati- were taken into custody last night in connection with the incident.

Akhtar said that Neelam Devi had an altercation with her neighbour Umesh Kamti who allegedly beat her and broke her hand. Neelam lodged a complaint with a police outpost seeking action against her neighbours.

Later, a panchayat was called to settle the issue. The panchayat asked her to opt for a compromise which was rejected by Neelam. At her insistence to pursue the case, Neelam's in-laws branded her with a hot sickle all over the body on September two.

On getting the information, district magistrate Narmadeshwar Lal asked the Patharghat block development officer Shyam Narai Singh to make an inquiry and an FIR was lodged on the basis of Neelam's statement in which nine persons including her in-laws were made accused. Her in-laws are absconding since the incident.

Neelam, the wife of a labourer, is undergoing treatment at Saur Bazar hospital in Saharsa.
