A curfew like situation had built up and more than a dozen persons mostly travelling by buses and other vehicles were injured on Wednesday afternoon near Gaddopur, adjacent to Phaphamau, on the outskirts of the city following heavy brickbatting by an angry mob.

Piqued over the death of a youth belonging to the Yadav community the residents of the area staged a road blockade demanding arrest of members of a particular community who had allegedly beat up Shesh Mani alias Mona Yadav (20) on August 28.

Mona subsequently succumbed to his injuries at the SRN Hospital on Tuesday evening.

His death was the cause behind the anger which had spilled on the road. The heavy brickbatting had also resulted in damage to half a dozen vehicles including a police Jeep. Cops from various police station were on the spot in large numbers to pacify the angry mob which had gone out of control.

Efforts for a truce were being made by the police officers at the time of filing of the report.

Sources said, the deceased had his dhaba at Gaddopur. His younger brother Kallu ran a betel shop next to the dhaba. On July 15 last some youths of a particular community from nearby Rudapur village had entered into a scuffle with Kallu over payment of money for the betel they had consumed.

Next day, the Yadavs cornered one Irfan and his associates and beat them up to make even the score.

A cross FIR was lodged at Phaphamau police chowki. On Monday last, Mona was heading to his dhaba on his mobike after fetching milk from Malakharhar.

He was waylaid allegedly by Irfan and others who beat him up. He was admitted to the SRN Hospital with critical injuries but he died on Tuesday. His death sparked off a wave of resentment and anger amongst the Yadavs who decided for a showdown on this incident.

Sources said, the situation would have gone out of hands in case the protesters had succeeded in reaching Rudapur village. However, despite heavy brickbatting policemen succeeded in containing the angry protesters by telling them that two of the accused had been arrested. The situation was still being described as tense.
